چکیده

PURPOSE Vitrectomy is associated with the rapid progression of nuclear cataracts. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that age-related liquefaction of the vitreous gel may also be associated with lens opacification. METHODS Lenses from eye bank eyes were graded for nuclear, cortical, and posterior subcapsular opacities, and the amount of liquid vitreous was measured. RESULTS Nuclear sclerosis (NS) grade, percent liquefaction, and age all correlated highly (P < 0.0001). After adjustment was made for age, the correlation between NS and percent liquefaction was 0.37 (P < 0.0001), and the correlation between age and NS after adjustment for liquefaction was 0.57 (P < 0.0001). After the eyes were stratified into age groups, the correlation between NS and percent liquefaction was found to be highest in eyes from donors aged 51 to 70. Cortical and posterior subcapsular opacities increased with age, but scores for these cataract types did not significantly correlate with vitreous liquefaction. CONCLUSIONS Loss of vitreous gel during aging increases the risk of nuclear cataracts. Preservation or replacement of the vitreous gel may protect patients from nuclear cataract.

Age-related liquefaction of the human vitreous body: LM and TEM evaluation of the role of proteoglycans and collagen.

PURPOSE To evaluate morphologic aspects of age-related liquefaction of the human vitreous body by light and electron microscopy to provide a basis from which future studies directed at the pathogenesis of this phenomenon can be undertaken. The study focuses on changes in fibrillar collagen and proteoglycans (PGs). METHODS Morphologic aspects of intravitreal liquefied spaces and matrix areas s...

Numerical simulation of the fluid dynamics in a 3D spherical model of partially liquefied vitreous due to eye movements under planar interface conditions

Partially liquefied vitreous humor is a common physical and biochemical degenerative change in vitreous body which the liquid component gets separated from collagen fiber network and leads to form a region of liquefaction. The main objective of this research is to investigate how the oscillatory motions influence flow dynamics of partial vitreous liquefaction (PVL). So far computational fluid d...

Age-related changes on the surface of vitreous collagen fibrils.

PURPOSE To determine whether aging vitreous collagen fibrils undergo ultrastructural changes that might underlie vitreous liquefaction and posterior vitreous detachment. METHODS Vitreous collagen fibrils from 21 human subjects (age range, 3-89 years) and from bovine eyes were isolated on electron microscopy grids. Cupromeronic blue labeling in the presence of 0.3 M MgCl(2) and immunogold labe...

Outward transport of fluorescein from the vitreous in aphakic eyes.

By administering fluorescein intravenously to 95 patients we calculated the ratio of fluorescein concentration in the vitreous at the time of its peak level compared with the estimated unbound concentration of fluorescein in the plasma at the same time. We studied 12 normal phakic and 83 aphakic eye approximately two months, one year, and more than two years after cataract extraction. All the e...

Refractive errors, axial ocular dimensions, and age-related cataracts: the Tanjong Pagar survey.

PURPOSE To describe the relationship of refractive errors and axial ocular dimensions and age-related cataract. METHODS Population-based, cross-sectional survey of ocular diseases among Chinese men and women aged 40 to 81 years (n = 1232) living in the Tanjong Pagar district in Singapore. As part of the examination, refraction and corneal curvature were determined with an autorefractor, with ...
